Sagres

SAGRES Sagres is the southernmost point of Portugal and Europe. It is a village located in the municipality of Vila do Bispo and is the most beautiful Portuguese window facing the Atlantic Ocean. With only about 2000 inhabitants and limited tourist attractions, its beauty lies in an irresistible combination of activities with nature, water sports and serenity. Here you can find grandiose cliffs and viewpoints where you can watch the waves breaking with drama.

In the Fortress of Sagres, you can see the wall still in good condition, which was formerly known as the “end of the known world” because beyond this cliff no one knew what existed. In the center you will find the “Plaza de Armas”, a magnificent wheel of winds on the ground and the church of Santa Maria. The Cabo São Vicente lighthouse (or Farol de D. Fernando) began to work in 1846. It was lit with oil, and its luminous range was around six nautical miles. Nowadays modernized and recovered, its light reaches 33 nautical miles and is one of the longest range lighthouses in Europe. This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful spots in the entire Algarve to watch the sunset!

The beaches of Sagres are nestled between cliffs, their sand is white and the water, although cooler than in the rest of the Algarve, is pleasant and translucent. Many beaches have waves, which appeals to surfers or SUP practitioners and you will find in them several opportunities to take a class in these sports that are so healthy and in tune with the landscape and environment of this region.
